Aluminum by Design: Jewelry to Jets Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Carnegie Museum of Art in October 2000. This is a comprehensive history of aluminum, with illustrations to aid the text. All major uses of aluminum are described and illustrated from the very beginning in the early 1800’s to current day use. It includes ideas of current use of aluminum in aircraft and automobiles at the time of the publishing. This is a very historic book and significant in its depth. It is easy to read and the illustrations make the text easier to understand. I use this book during my seminars to show the early history of aluminum. My wife Phyllis reads books aloud when we travel in the car. One year we brought this book along on a January trip to the Detroit Auto Show. On our ride back which was 750 miles, we usually break the trip up into two segments. We left Plymouth MI where we were staying with a friend and Phyllis started reading that book. When we arrived in Buffalo, NY, about the half way mark, it was a full on snowstorm. The interstate was down to one lane and traffic was crawling at 45 MPH. We were driving an A8 Audi, which is an all aluminum car, referenced in this book. We had Nokian snow tires from Finland on all 4 wheels. The car handled excellent and Phyllis continued reading. The book was so interesting that we chose to make the trip in one day. As we pulled into our yard, Phyllis just finished the book and exclaimed, “…what a beautiful ride, and what an interesting book that was…” It was a testament to the use of Aluminum by Audi and Alcoa in the fine handling and ride of the A8 (which I had purchased from a salvage pool, damaged in the rear so I could actually work on fixing the aluminum myself). The book had described the evolution of that material that we were directly experiencing and to how interesting a read this book was to both my wife and myself. |
